Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers
Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers are the main qualifications taken by students in Scotland, between the ages of 16 and 18. They are administered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and are the standard entry requirements for Scottish universities, as well as Being widely recognised across the UK and internationally.
Qualification Structure
National 5
The foundation level, taken in S4 (age 15-16). National 5s prepare students for the demands Of Higher study.
Higher
studied in S5 (age 16-17). Most students take 4-5 Highers. These are broadly equivalent to English A-Levels in terms of difficulty and university entrance requirements, though the structure And assessment differ.
- Graded A, B, C, D (A being the highest)
- Assessed by a combination of coursework (assignment) and a final SQA examination
- Normally one academic year of study
Advanced Higher
studied in S6 (age 17-18). These are more specialised and go deeper into subject content Than Highers. They are broadly comparable to first-year university level work.
- Graded A, B, C, D
- Significant coursework component (often a project or dissertation)
- Excellent preparation for university study
- Some universities offer direct entry into second year for students with strong Advanced Higher results
Subjects Covered
These notes cover five key subjects at both Higher and Advanced Higher levels:

Assessment
Each Higher subject is assessed through:
- An SQA question paper (external examination) sat in May
- A coursework component (assignment, project, or investigation) submitted to SQA
Advanced Higher subjects generally have:
- A more substantial project or dissertation (often worth a significant proportion of the final mark)
- An external examination with a greater emphasis on problem-solving and extended response
