Scottish Highers Physics
Scottish Highers Physics
Higher Physics covers mechanics, dynamics, electricity, waves, and radiation. The course emphasises both theoretical understanding and practical applications, preparing students for engineering and science degrees.
Topics
Mechanics
Kinematics, forces, energy, power, projectiles, and Newton’s laws of motion.
Dynamics & Space
Momentum, impulse, collisions, gravitation, orbital mechanics, and space physics.
Electricity
Circuit analysis, Ohm’s law, power, internal resistance, AC circuits, and semiconductor behaviour.
Particles & Waves
Wave properties, refraction, diffraction, interference, the photoelectric effect, and particle physics.
Waves & Radiation
Electromagnetic spectrum, nuclear radiation, half-life, nuclear reactions, and dosimetry.
Study Tips
Always show working in calculations — SQA awards marks for method even if the final answer is wrong. Memorise key formulae and practise deriving them. Pay attention to unit conversions.
Exam Information
These notes are aligned with the official SQA syllabus and cover Higher and Advanced Higher material. Each topic includes worked examples, common pitfalls, and practice problems to reinforce understanding.
Assessment Structure
The examination commonly consists of a written paper testing knowledge, understanding, and problem-solving across all topics. Coursework or project components may also contribute to the final grade, depending on the subject and level.
How to Use These Notes
- Start with the topic you find most challenging and work through systematically
- Complete all worked examples before moving on — they reinforce key concepts
- Review the Common Pitfalls section in each topic to avoid frequent mistakes
- Use the Summary section as a quick reference for last-minute revision
- Attempt practice problems under timed conditions to build exam confidence
